1) May you introduce yourself to our readers and tell us how was born you passion for NWN?
jackyo123Good evening. I am Jackyo (John, but my younger sister
has always called me 'jacky' and it stuck). I've been
playing computer games since about 1980 or so, when I
got my first Apple II+ computer. I started on
Wizardry, which was maybe the first graphical RPG for
the personal computer, and then played Bard's Tale and
the great SSI Gold Box games.
I became a huge fan of the Baldurs Gate series, and
bought NeverWinter Nights the day it was released. But
I was very disappointed with the first NeverWinter
Nights campaign - so much so, that I uninstalled it. I
am a big fan of 'party' systems, and didn't like the
solo player aspect of NWN1 (I've never been a big
online MP player). When NWN2 came out, I decided to
give it another shot - and was immediately hooke
2) Congratulations for your module "Night Howls in Nestlehaven" Can you talk about it?
jackyo123Yes, certainly. Night Howls in Nestlehaven is loosely
based on a novel I started writing when I was
finishing up high-school. I've written about 600 or so
pages, but I don't think I will ever finish it. So I
decided that I could adapt it to NWN2, and took the
plunge.
The story is basically a political intrigue mystery.
You (the player (PC)) are a tired, somewhat
out-of-shape mercenary who lives fairly well in a
comfortable estate about a few day's ride from the
city of Yartar, in the Forgotten Realms. You receive a
message from the Constable of Nestlehaven to come to
their aid - they are offering a sizeable sum of money,
Knighthood, and titular rights and holdings, to
whomever can solve their current crisis.
When you arrive, you find a city on the brink of a
civil war. The two Noble families, who have shared
power for the past two centuries, are feuding with
each other, each blaming the other one for a series of
grisly murders that recently occurred. The player
needs to tread through this tangle of lies and deceit,
uncover who is really behind the killings, and why,
and earn their promised reward. Along the way, you
will add other mercenaries to your group - some good,
some not so good - but all focused on the reward and
the fame to be gained by solving the mystery.
The module allows for a wide-variety of side-missions,
and is completely non-linear in the middle section
(the first hour and the last hour are completely
linear). Total play-time is anywhere from 6-10 hours,
depending upon how fast you choose to play through the
main story. There are over 15
side-encounters/missions, most with a boss battle, so
there is a lot to do outside of the main story.
Part 2 of the series will have the player having to
decide which faction in the conflict to join - there
will be four of them, so there will be a lot of
replayability.
Italian/ItalianoSi, certo.
3)Which level/class is best to play your modules? How many classes may raise a character?
jackyo123The module is balanced for a level 9 character, on
normal D&D rules (where Area of Effect spells cast by
your NPC's will damage your party members). This is
the 'Hard' setting in NWN2. Level 9/10 players will
find the mod difficult.
Level 10/11 players will have a challenge, and will
need to employ some tactics, but shouldn't have to
reload very often.
Players who start at level 12 or higher should have a
straight-ahead fight, with some challenge, but not
overly hard.
Any class can play. I only force 1 NPC on you, a
rogue, and just for about 1/4 of the mod. You can
dismiss her after returning from the first series of
'main story' missions. So, out of all the possible
classes, a Rogue might be the least satisfying to
play, since you will have another one in your party
for a while.
I expect that melee characters will have a slightly
easier time than spellcasters - but that's normal with
D&D until you reach the higher levels (13+). At that
point spellcasters really become killing machines.
You can expect to gain about 3 levels in part1
4)What did inspired you in creating your modules?
jackyo123I have always been a big fan of Tolkien of course, and
other fantasy authors like Robert Jordan and Terry
Brooks, but I was majorly influenced by the Dune
series. The first three Dune books (I didnt care for
any of the later books) were intensely political in
aspect - factions against factions, all maneuvering
for advantage. If one book influenced this module more
than any other, I would say Dune is that book
5)As the plot goes will there be choices in the dialogues which will
affect the ending?
jackyo123Yes. The faction you choose in part2 will affect how
the story ends. In part1, the ending is the same for
everyone
Italian/ItalianoSi.
6) In the setting, will there be some companions or creatures to help our character? Can you briefly describe them to us?
jackyo123There are 5 npc's who will join you in part1 (should
you choose to take them with you).
They are:
Jonas - a level 10 WarPriest, Jonas is a fairly
well-known mercenary who has done work all along the
Sword Coast, as a sell-sword, guard-captain,
bodyguard, and other, less savory jobs. He has run
into a spell of bad-luck, though, and needs money
pretty badly. That is why he is in Nestlehaven.
Hephius - a level 9 Sorcerer. Hephius is a complete
uknown. In fact, he wasn't even supposed to be in
Nestlehaven. The player will need to ask him why he is
really there ....
Sinulair - level 9 thief w/ very high magic-use
abilities. She wants to be famous, and rich. Pure and
simple. She is an interesting companion, and one of my
favorites to write.
Jessica Meganstorm - level 14 fighter - Jessica is a
world-famous mercenary, known far and wide for her
past exploits. She is snotty, and stuck-up, and
fiercely independent. You will need to do some pretty
impressive things to get her to join you ...
Mansoon the Monk - level 13 Monk - Mansoon is an
assassin, one of the Monks of the Dark Moon. However,
he has recently had a change of heart, and is in
Nestlehaven for his own reasons ...
Two other NPC's that were joinable, but I changed them
so they will only join in part 2 -
Virania Trestledown - a Druid, who is not afraid to do
whatever is necessary to achieve her goals.
Sobul, the Fallen Paladin - Sobul is a former Paladin
who has fallen from grace, and is on a desperate quest
to fight evil and redeem himself in the eyes of his
God.
E' arrogante e testarda e molto indipendente.
7)Which were the most hard times in the planning of the module with the NWN2 toolset? How much time did it took?
jackyo123My biggest problem with the toolset - and still is -
is its instability. I wasted at least 100 hours,
perhaps as many as 200, fighting corruption problems,
bugs, trashed areas, conversations with broken links,
etc. Very very frustrating. I hope Obsidian is working
on this, as it is causing many people to shelve work
on their modules until stability is restored.
I spent maybe 3 1/2 months doing the module, and maybe
1 month testing with a dedicated group of people who
helped me iron out the bugs and polish the module to a
fine finish. They are all mentioned in the release
notes, and several of them are mentioned as
'mercenaries' in the in-game dialogues. Two of them
will actually appear as mercenaries, in-game, in part 2.
The toolset is a wonderful, powerful piece of software
- but it is not really what I would consider 'ready'
for prime-time. Its sort of a 'mid-term' beta. Many
buttons don't do anything (such as 'pristine',
'merge') and many others. Its a memory hog, and
crashes quite often when baking, saving, or - most
frequently of all - loading of areas.
I believe, as do many - that the main problem with the
toolset is memory management. For example - I use an
Intel Core2 Duo machine - and yet, when the Toolset
loads, it loads up the AMDXP memory manager!!! (the
game engine does not - it uses the correct manager -
and the game has always been stable for me). I've
tried renaming and switching the dll files, which does
work - but it didnt improve stability.
So, if Obsidian can crack the 'big' bugs - such as the
frequent crashing - I can easily overlook missing
features and buttons that dont do anything. I lost
over a week at one point, where I discovered that the
toolset has a very nasty habit of overwriting OLD
saves - yes, you read correctly - making a save every
few minutes doesnt always help - the toolset sometimes
writes to the wrong file/directory, and can thus
corrupt old files you thought were safe. The only fix
for this is to manually move the directory that the
toolset uses to another location. I do this every ten
minutes. So, I estimate that, for each hour of
productive work I do, I spend 15 minutes dealing with
saves, crashes, and reloads.
It needs to improve if we are going to increase the
flow of modules to the community. Nestlehaven would
have been out over a month earlier had I not had all
these issues, including a week lost in late april due
to the problems mentioned above.
This might all sound very negative - and it is, to
some extent - but I am still here, modding - so I
still believe in the toolset, and with patience it can
produce stunning results.
